This Bible was owned by Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, the United States Navy’s first Admiral. Born in Tennessee in 1801, Farrugut served in the Navy from childhood. At only nine years old, he became a midshipman, and within three years he was placed in charge of a ship. During the United States Civil War, Farragut chose to fight with the Union rather than with the state of his birth. While serving in the military during the Civil War, he carried this pocket Bible with him. He later gave it to a Mr. Carter. Farragut Academy, named for the admiral, later used this Bible for seventy years as a museum exhibit.
